Wangka Maya Language Centre hosted an exhibition of 'scratch photography' in Port Hedland as part of the commmoration events for the 1967 Referendum's 40th anniversary in June 2007.

The exhibition of photographs was developed by photographer Tobias Titz of Melbourne. Tobias' unusual medium of expression is to take photographs of people and then to take a photograph of the background with the person absent. The person photographed is then invited to scratch something into the wet picture. Both the person's photograph and their message is displayed in a large black and white format. Tobias took over 300 photographs in the Pilbara, of which 20 formed the major exhibition.

Wangka Maya asked Tobias to take photographs and collect thoughts about the 1967 40th anniversary. The exhibition of photographs was then held at the Port Hedland Courthouse Art Gallery. The exhibition also toured Australia and went to Germany and will eventaully return to Hedland to be housed at the new Wangka Maya Language Centre.
