About the unit
Wangka Maya Interpreting and Translating Service (WMITS) is an arm of the Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre. The main office is located in South Hedland, Western Australia.
The Wangka Maya Language Centre Committee governs WMITS. Professional linguists and qualified Indigenous translators and interpreters staff the unit. These staff posses a wide range of skills and knowledge and can advise on cultural matters relating to the establishment of good interpreting and translating processes.
Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre provides a translating and interpreting service. There are over 30 traditional indigenous languages in the Pilbara Region and many Aboriginal people speak English as a second, third and even fourth language. Aboriginal people who are able to deal with everyday matters in English experience difficulties when faced with the ‘high’ English or specific technical terminology employed by doctors, lawyers and police officers.

This brochure contains a table of costs for interpreting work. Costs for translating work must be quoted on and is dependant on the size and complexity o the work to be translated.
