The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) have awarded grant funding to Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal language Centre to undertake Stage Two of the project “Hidden Histories of the Pilbara”. Many of our members will remember the “Hidden Histories Project” which was completed in 2009. Wangka Maya employed two historians, Dr Malcom Allbrook and Dr Mary Anne Jebb to research and report on the histories of the Pilbara.
Malcolm and Mary Anne will return to the Pilbara and arrive in Hedland in early June for the first of two visits, to meet and record the words of those who want their stories recorded. People who record their oral histories will be given a copy of their recordings for their family record. Master copies will be kept at Wangka Maya as a community history record.
If you are interested, or know any one that may be, please contact Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre on 08 9172 2344 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
We hope that this project will result in an important history record of the lives and experiences of our people here in the Pilbara. This project was made possible by grant frunding from AIATSIS and we acknowledge that without thier vital support this hsitory may have been lost and not been recorded.
